The Ankh is the ancient Egyptian symbol, whilst also being a hieroglyph, representing life. It is not merely thought to represent earthly life but also immortality in the afterlife. It can be related with magical protection. After the demise of the Egyptian polytheistic religion, the Christian Coptic church adopted the Ankh as a form for the cross, known once the Crux Ansata (“cross with handle”). The Ankh symbol represents ‘eternal life’ and was often found inside the names of Pharaoh’s which includes Tut-ANKH-amun. Often held by A Pharaoh or god, giving him life, or held by a Pharaoh giving his people life – this differentiated the “immortals” from the mortals.
