Bastet was the name of a female deity from ancient Egyptian mythology. She was considered to be the goddess of solar energy and war. Historical records indicate that the Egyptians have worshiped Bastet since the second Dynasty.
Quite possibly the most important deities in the Egyptian pantheon, it was depicted as the head of a cat. It is for this reason that cats were also highly revered amongst the Egyptians. Throughout the years Bastet was depicted in a variety of different ways with varying clothes, attire and costume. Originally taking the shape of a lion and often helped protect the king during battle. However the Greek rulers for the Ptolemaic Dynasty associated it instead with their particular Artemis, changing her appearance to a cat and calling her An Ailuros, lunar goddess.
