The Egyptian Deity Anubis was the very first and some say only, Egyptian God that controlled the underworld. Referred to through the Egyptians as Anpu, the god was defeated by Osiris. Anubis was frequently depicted taking the shape of a black jackal or more often as a hybrid human whose head was shaped that way of a jackal. In more modern times the presence of a jackal tends to signify imminent death and is historically where this originates.
One of several gods whom adorn the walls of tombs all over the Egyptian plains he is also recorded as being mentioned in the book of the Dead. A master embalmer, Anubis also taught this skill to his legions of followers whom were recorded as proficient herbal practitioners.
